ABOUT

Richard, Alexandrea_photo.jpg

Hi there!

My name is Alexandrea Richard (she/her), but you can just call me Alex. I am a musician, educator, digital creator, and baker from St. Charles, MO. I am currently based in Winston-Salem, NC. I received a Master of Music in Percussion Performance from The University of Nebraska Lincoln, under the guidance of Dr. Dave Hall, and received a Bachelor of Music in Education from The University of Tennessee Knoxville, under the guidance of Dr. Andy Bliss.

As a performer, I seek out ensemble opportunities which embrace new music, and music of non-Western cultures. I am fortunate to have been a part of fantastic performing ensembles at my previous schools including the University of Nebraska Percussion Ensemble (PASIC IPEC Showcase 2019), Nebraska Steel (Lincoln Arts Advocacy Day, NET Live, Kendal Williams Residency), and the University of Tennessee Percussion Ensemble (PASIC IPEC Showcase 2018, PASIC New Literature Session 2015). In my pursuit of new music performance, I have been a performer at the 2022 Avaloch Farm Music Institute with LNK Percussion, the 2021 Bang on a Can Summer Festival and Loud Weekend, the 2017 and 2018 Nief Norf Summer Festival, and the Big Ears Festival in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With an express interest in new music, I love connecting with different artists through commissioning and collaboration efforts across various styles and mediums.

As an educator, I have enjoyed teaching students of all ages. In my time at Nebraska, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Percussion Studio which included teaching the Percussion Skills course for undergraduate music education majors, teaching private lessons for percussion majors, directing the Steel PANguin beginner steel band, and completing administrative and organizational tasks necessary in a university percussion studio. While pursuing my Bachelors, I had many opportunities to work with k-12 students in classrooms and in one-on-one private music lesson settings. I have been a marching percussion clinician for a variety of high schools around the Knoxville area, and was the front ensemble technician for Powell High School from 2015-2018. While staying active in marching arts education, I have also been a percussion caption judge for the LINKS Marching Competition in Lincoln, NE, and the Kearny Marching Festival in Kearny, NE.

Community engagement is a fundamental part of my creative work, and I regularly initiate collaborative projects across other artistic media, present clinics, and perform in non-conventional concert spaces. In 2020, I planned and organized the “Day of Dance,” an outdoor collaborative performance with students of the dance and instrumental departments at UNL. In 2021, I led the Lincoln performance of Elliot Cole’s “Flowerpot Music” as a part of the national event Make Music Day. In Spring 2020, I presented my virtual clinic “Tangible Advocacy for Music Educators” to UNL chapters of CNAfME and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In addition to performing in traditional concert halls, I have performed with contemporary music groups in the Ijams Nature Center, Knoxville Museum of Art, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, The UNL Center for Emerging and Media Arts, and the Knoxville Emporium Center / Art & Culture Alliance. As a member of Nebraska Steel, I have performed at the Lincoln Arts Festival in Tower Square and at Arts Advocacy Day at the Center for Emerging Media Arts.

As a digital creator, I aim for clarity and functionality in design without sacrificing style and character. I believe that it is essential that the materials we engage with are designed with people in mind. Because we are able to interact with so many different communities through an online landscape, my work aims to be inclusive, accessible, and personable. I have primarily worked as a digital creator through freelance opportunities, school work, and personal projects.

In my free time, I enjoy baking, hanging out at local coffee shops, playing Animal Crossing, watching anime, and spending time with my partner, Louis, and our little gray cat, Bubbles.
